THE SHORT VERSION
The HTTP status 404 is called Not Found. It tells the browser that the server cannot find the requested resource. The code does not say whether that absence is temporary or permanent. A missing page therefore needs investigation before you decide whether to restore it, replace it or leave it unavailable. Source: MDN: 404 Not Found
Start with the link people followed
Check the exact address and where it was linked, such as an email or destination page. Correct a typing mistake or broken internal link at its source. This tackles the route that led someone to the error instead of only changing the message they see afterwards.
Choose a helpful next step
If content has moved, identify a genuinely relevant replacement and review the redirect. If there is no replacement, give the missing-page screen useful navigation or search. Match the response to what happened so readers have a clear way to continue.
