Booking abandonment

THE SHORT VERSION

Booking abandonment describes an online booking process that a visitor starts but does not complete within the period being measured.

Booking abandonment describes an online booking process that a visitor starts but does not complete within the period being measured.

Booking abandonment applies the idea of checkout abandonment to travel sales: a booking process starts but is not completed. Shopify describes abandoned checkouts as checkout sessions started but not completed. For a travel report, define the starting event and the time allowed for completion before calculating a rate. Make the measurement reproducible

Define a clear starting event and finishing event. For example, use entering traveller details and booking confirmation if those steps fit your process. Record the observation window and how repeated attempts are handled so someone else can reproduce the report.

Look for evidence at the point of exit

Test the last completed step on a phone and review available error records. Check whether a sample enquiry was later booked by an adviser before treating it as lost. These checks give the team evidence for a specific improvement rather than an assumed reason for leaving.
