THE SHORT VERSION

Consent mode communicates a visitor’s consent choices to Google tags so they can adjust their behaviour.

Consent mode communicates a visitor’s consent choices to Google tags so they can adjust their behaviour.

Google’s consent mode receives information about consent to cookies or app identifiers and changes tag behaviour accordingly. It works with a consent banner or widget; it does not supply that banner itself. Google documents basic and advanced implementations, which handle tag loading and data transmission differently. Test the choices people can make

Ask the person responsible for analytics to test accepting, declining and changing a choice. Check what the tags do in each case. Reviewing the actual behaviour gives you evidence about the setup beyond the fact that a banner appears on screen.

Keep responsibilities clear

Record who manages the banner, who manages the tags and who reviews privacy requirements. Ask those people to agree the intended behaviour before changing the setup. Treat a successful technical test as evidence about implementation, rather than proof that every privacy obligation has been met.
