THE SHORT VERSION

NDC (New Distribution Capability) is an IATA data standard that lets airlines send their own offers, fares and extras to travel sellers and take orders back, rather than relying only on GDSs to build offers from the fares and schedules the airline has filed.

NDC (New Distribution Capability) is an IATA data standard that lets airlines send their own offers, fares and extras to travel sellers and take orders back, rather than relying only on GDSs to build offers from the fares and schedules the airline has filed.

IATA launched the NDC programme in October 2012. NDC is an XML-based messaging standard, not a booking system, a GDS or a sales channel in itself. IATA says it is open to any third party, intermediary or IT provider.

Why it matters to agents

Airlines use NDC to offer fare bundles, extras and richer content, and some keep certain fares or extras for NDC connections. Some have also added a charge to bookings made through traditional GDS connections. Agents usually reach NDC content through a GDS or aggregator that has added NDC connections, through a consolidator or through an airline’s own NDC connection.

Common confusion

  • “NDC” is often used loosely to mean any direct airline connection. Strictly it is the messaging standard, and NDC content can arrive through a GDS.

  • Changes, refunds and schedule changes can work differently from bookings ticketed through a GDS in the traditional way.

  • Content, charges and take-up vary by airline and change often, so check each airline’s current distribution policy.
