A session groups activity during a period of interaction with a website or app. In Google Analytics, a session begins when activity starts and no session is already active. The default inactivity timeout is 30 minutes. This setting can be adjusted. Source: Google Analytics: About Analytics sessions

State which system you mean

When reviewing a travel website, label the analytics platform, date range and session measure. Keep that note beside any calculation that uses sessions as its denominator. This lets another team member understand how the figure was produced rather than assuming that every reporting tool groups activity in the same way.

Separate activity from people

In a hypothetical enquiry journey, one person could research a holiday, leave and return after the session has timed out. Under the session rules, that later activity can begin another session. Use the system’s user measure when the question concerns users and explain its definition separately rather than relabelling sessions as people. Source: Google Analytics: About Analytics sessions
