THE SHORT VERSION
Uptime describes operational time. To express it as a percentage, divide operational time by the total measured period and multiply by 100. Atlassian uses this approach to explain availability: total elapsed time minus downtime, divided by total elapsed time. Source: Atlassian: Reliability and availability
Define what is being monitored
Agree whether the measure covers the homepage, search, payment or the complete booking journey. Record the monitoring frequency and treatment of planned maintenance. This makes an uptime figure easier to interpret when comparing it with the service the business actually needs.
Keep the calculation visible
In a hypothetical 1,000-minute monitoring period with 10 minutes of downtime, uptime is 99%. Keep the period and the incident record beside the percentage. Review failed booking steps as well so the team can discuss practical impact alongside the headline figure.
