About takepayments

Based in Stockport, takepayments says it specialises in helping independent UK businesses take card payments, selling card machines, online payments and point of sale systems. It calls itself a Global Payments company: Companies House shows a Global Payments company has been its controlling shareholder since April 2024, and the FCA register has listed Global Payments as one of its trading names since May 2026.

takepayments is not the acquirer itself. It says it holds licences from Mastercard and Visa Europe as an independent sales organisation and member service provider, working with a number of merchant acquirers that process the card transactions. Merchants hold a separate contract with an acquiring bank that takepayments nominates.

Online, takepayments says its payment gateway has free plugins for over 50 shopping carts. It accepts major cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay. Pay by Link creates single-use links with a pre-set amount, sent by branded email or as a QR code, with 3D Secure checks. A virtual terminal takes phone payments, and merchants can track transactions in real time and set up recurring and scheduled payments. Its online pages now also invite merchants to apply directly with Worldpay Ecommerce, which means a separate contract with Worldpay, another Global Payments company.
