THE SHORT VERSION

A card-not-present payment uses card details remotely, such as online or by telephone, without reading the card at a physical payment terminal.

A card-not-present payment uses card details remotely, such as online or by telephone, without reading the card at a physical payment terminal.

Card-not-present payments use card details without reading the card at a physical terminal. Online checkout and telephone orders are common examples. Stripe also includes payments made using card details previously saved with the customer’s approval for future use. Source: Stripe: Card-not-present transactions

Choose a clear collection route

Agree the approved method for online and telephone payments with the payment provider. Give staff instructions for handling a failed or interrupted attempt. This helps keep payment handling consistent across the team and gives travellers a clear next step.

Review the payment evidence

Check how the system records the transaction reference and any authentication result. Ask the provider which checks and records are appropriate for each payment route. That gives the business a practical basis for investigating a disputed payment without assuming every remote transaction follows the same process.
