An MX record is a DNS record that identifies the mail server responsible for receiving email for a domain. MX stands for mail exchange.

A mail exchange, or MX, record directs email to a domain’s receiving mail servers. When records have different preference numbers, the lower number is preferred. Cloudflare describes the sending server looking up these records to find where it should deliver the recipient’s message. Source: Cloudflare: MX records

Include email in a domain move

Before changing domain settings, record the current email provider and ask it for the required MX records. Include mailboxes and aliases used for enquiries in the change plan. This keeps email reception visible alongside the website work.

Test incoming messages

After the provider confirms the change, send test messages from an external address to the agreed business addresses. Check that they reach the intended inboxes and record the outcome. This verifies the receiving route that the MX settings are meant to support.
