THE SHORT VERSION

Booking status is the recorded stage or outcome of a reservation, such as pending, on hold, confirmed or cancelled, as defined by the system concerned.

Booking status is the recorded stage or outcome of a reservation, such as pending, on hold, confirmed or cancelled, as defined by the system concerned.

A booking status describes where a reservation stands in the system that records it. Read the provider’s definitions before treating labels from different systems as equivalent. Expedia Group, for example, distinguishes an on-hold booking from a completed booking in its booking-management documentation. Source: Expedia Group: managing a booking

A travel example

In an illustrative workflow, a customer submits a request and an adviser sees “pending”. The adviser checks the supplier response before telling the customer the booking is confirmed. The customer’s request and the supplier’s confirmation should have separate, understandable labels.

Keep related records separate

For your acceptance tests, record the reservation status, payment status and document status separately. This is a recommended operating check: it stops a team from using a payment message or a sent email as its only evidence of supplier confirmation.

Questions worth asking

Ask which system owns the final status, how updates reach the agent and what happens after a timeout. Ask to retrieve the booking record after the original response is interrupted. Expedia’s documented retrieval operation is one example of checking the stored booking instead of relying only on the first message. Source: Expedia Group: managing a booking
