THE SHORT VERSION
A self-transfer puts the traveller in charge of moving between flights, often on separate tickets. Skyscanner explains that baggage may need collecting and checking in again, with immigration or security checks. A missed onward flight may require another ticket; any provider transfer protection has its own conditions. Source: Skyscanner: Self-transfer flights
Check the route step by step
Confirm the airports, terminals, baggage arrangements and check-in deadlines. Check the relevant entry and transit requirements for the traveller’s nationality and route. This helps reveal what must happen between flights before judging whether the proposed connection is suitable.
Read any protection promise
Ask who provides transfer protection, which events it covers and how help is requested. Keep the terms with the booking information. This gives the traveller a clearer basis for comparing the option, including what they would need to do if the first flight were delayed.
