THE SHORT VERSION
Google’s Gemini documentation describes structured output using a JSON schema to specify the shape and types of returned data. It also makes a key distinction: correctly structured output can still contain incorrect values. Format validation and checking the meaning of the information are separate tasks. Define only the fields you need
For an enquiry, specify fields such as departure date, party size and destination, with a clear way to represent missing details. This gives the receiving system an agreed structure without encouraging it to treat an unknown value as a confirmed travel requirement.
Check the values before using them
Compare important details with the original enquiry and validate them against the next step in the workflow. For example, review the date before searching availability. A response that fits the format should still earn trust through the checks needed for the actual task.
