THE SHORT VERSION

Tool calling lets an AI model request an action or information from an external function or service.

Tool calling lets an AI model request an action or information from an external function or service.

Tool calling is also known as function calling. In the Claude tool-use model, the AI produces a structured request for a tool. Client tools execute in the application, while server tools execute on the provider’s infrastructure. A generated request and a completed operation are separate stages of that process. Separate looking from changing

Define which tools may read availability and which may create or amend a booking. Give each action a clear permission rule and approval point. This makes the intended authority visible before an assistant is allowed to act on a traveller’s request.

Confirm what actually happened

Check the returned result and the booking system’s status before telling someone their reservation is confirmed. If the operation fails or the result is unclear, explain that uncertainty and hand it over. This keeps the message to the traveller aligned with the recorded outcome.
