THE SHORT VERSION

Upselling means offering a higher-priced version or upgrade of the product or service a customer is considering or already uses.

Upselling means offering a higher-priced version or upgrade of the product or service a customer is considering or already uses.

Upselling offers a higher-priced version of a product or service. It differs from cross-selling, which adds a complementary purchase. In a hypothetical holiday example, offering an available higher room category instead of the original room is an upsell. Source: Salesforce: Upselling and cross-selling

Connect the option to a stated preference

If a traveller has asked for more space, explain the verified differences between the room options. Show the full price difference and let them keep the original choice. This gives the comparison a clear purpose and leaves the decision with the customer.

Check the details of the upgraded offer

Compare the inclusions, cancellation conditions and occupancy rules for the actual options. Avoid assuming that a higher room category includes a different meal plan or transfer. A written comparison gives the adviser and traveller the same basis for agreeing the change.
