THE SHORT VERSION

Anchor text is the visible wording of a link. It gives readers and search engines context about the page the link leads to.

Anchor text is the visible wording of a link. It gives readers and search engines context about the page the link leads to.

Google calls the visible wording of a link its anchor text. Its guidance recommends text that is descriptive, reasonably concise and relevant to both the current page and the destination. Useful link wording sets an expectation about what the reader will find. Source: Google Search Central: Link best practices

Name the useful destination

When linking from a cruise guide, use wording such as “cruise cabin types” if that accurately describes the destination page. Read the link without the surrounding sentence. This is a quick way to check whether someone can understand where it will take them.

Keep the wording natural

Choose links because they answer a useful next question and fit the sentence. Avoid inserting a string of search phrases into the link label. This gives the reader a clear next step while keeping the article comfortable to read.
