Breadcrumb navigation is a trail of links showing where a page sits within a website’s hierarchy.

Breadcrumb navigation is a trail of links showing where a page sits within a website’s hierarchy.

A breadcrumb trail describes a page’s position in the site hierarchy and provides a route back through its levels. Google describes it as a way for people to understand and explore a site, moving through the hierarchy one level at a time. Source: Google Search Central: Breadcrumbs

Use a route that makes sense

For a hypothetical destination page, a trail might run from Destinations to Spain to Barcelona. Check that each linked level exists and helps someone browse. This gives the trail a clear purpose beyond repeating words from the page address.

Test it on a small screen

Open each breadcrumb link and check the trail at mobile width. Keep labels short enough to read while still identifying the section. This makes the hierarchy easier to follow and helps reveal broken links or awkward wrapping before publication.
