THE SHORT VERSION

A title tag is the HTML title element that names a web page. Search engines may use it when creating the title shown in search results.

A title tag is the HTML title element that names a web page. Search engines may use it when creating the title shown in search results.

The HTML title element supplies a page title. Google can use it to create a search result’s title link, but it also considers headings and other text. The displayed search title therefore may differ from the title tag entered in the website editor. Source: Google Search Central: Title links

Name the page’s specific subject

Give each important page a clear title that describes its actual content. For a glossary definition, use the term and an appropriate brand reference. This helps distinguish it from a guide, product page or category page covering a related subject.

Read the result as a visitor

Check the live page title alongside its heading and search appearance. Remove repeated keywords and wording that promises content the page does not provide. The aim is an accurate invitation to read, with enough detail to distinguish the page from nearby results.
